APGAR SCORE

 



 OVERVIEW

The newborn’s Apgar Score is routinely assessed & recorded at 1 minute after birth and may be repeated later if the score is remains low.

FIVE VITAL INDICATORS OF APGAR SCORING:-

INDICATOR

0 POINTS

1 POINT

2 POINT

Heart rate

absent

<100 beats per minute

≥ 100 beats per minute

Respiratory rate & effort

Absent

Slow, irregular breathing, weak cry

Good rate & effort, vigorous cry

Muscle tone

Flaccid, limp

Minimal flexion of extremities

Good flexion, active motion

Reflex irritability

No response

Minimal response to gentle slap on soles

Respond promptly with a cry or active movement

Skin color

Pallor or cyanosis

Body skin color normal, extremities blue

Body & extremity skin color normal

 INTERVENTIONS:-

Score 8-10:- No intervention required

Score 4-7:- Stimulate; rub newborn’s back, administer oxygen to newborns; rescore at specific intervals

Score 0-3:- Newborn requires full resuscitation; rescore at specific intervals
